Samayara Chaka : The famous Oriya Drama by Mohapatra Rajendra Prasad
SAMAYARA CHAKA
(Wheel of Time)

SCENE-I >>

(Morning 07:00 hrs. Shri. Madan Mohan Mohanty's residence-cum-office.  Inside the room there is a sofa set, a telephone and a television set; and both Madan Mohan Mohanty and his wife Meena are watching the live coverage of the........ Independence Day on the small screen)

Meena : Today you have no office as it is a holiday. so let's go and see a movie and then we
               shall go to the market and . . . . . .

Madan : (Laughingly) Our ancestors had very rightly said "Having been born a female . . . .

Meena : I am not saying. . . . . . but you started assessing my knowledge.

Madan : The Government's women's education policy is unsuccessful because of this . . . . .

Meena : What ! Because of this ?

Madan : Didn't you hear what the prime minister said when he was hoisting our National
               Flag ?

Meena : Ha ! We have been hearing all this since long.

Madan : Oh, no. Don't say like that, after all I am a Civil Engineer, and we have to perform
our duties in strict adherence to the prescribed rules.  Whatever little bit of name
and fame I've achieved till date is purely on account of my efficient work.  You are
               not . . . (Phone rings).

Madan : Hello, Good Morning ! I have to meet the Minister at 7 p.m., O.K. bye.

Meena : Who ?

Madan : Agriculture Minister's P.A. This evening I have got to meet the Minister.

Meena : What a job ! Only work, work, work and work.

Madan : Our duty is only to look after the people. We have to discuss the exact quantum of
water that we have to provide, through irrigation, this winter season for the crops.

Meena : You can discuss all this afterwards. Now lets go and have our food, it is all getting
               cold.
(Meena holds Madan's hands and leads him towards the dining room). If
everybody else in our country thought like you, then our country would not be in
              such a miserable condition.

Madan : Let's wait until the time comes when our country's position will most definitely
               change for the better.
(Meanwhile the servant boy- Ghana brought in a big fish wrapped in straw)

Ghana  : Maa. . . . . . this.

Madan : What's that ?

Ghana  : Thikadar Deba Babu gave one. . .. .
               (Deba Babu enters)

Thikadar : Good morning ! Sir. By taking a loan I dug a pond and fish were caught,
                   therefore . . . .

Madan : Did Maa ask you . . .

Thikadar : No Sir, today . . . . .

Madan : How dare you enter my quarters without permission ?

Thikadar : I didn't get a chance to talk to you in the office, so . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Madan : Thus, you came in here. Remember office works, only in office, so . . . . . . . . . . .

Thikadar : I am going Sir.

Madan : Take that fish out.
(Thikadar takes the fish and makes an exit from Madan's quarters).

Madan : (he angrily told Ghana) - This time I am sparing you. But let not this sort of thing
be ever repeated. (Again the phone rang).

Madan : Yes, speaking. Did you just come to the office now ? If the train was late, why
didn't you come by bus. Cashier Babu has taken the keys and gone and would very
soon be reaching the office. Please give the Notice, I am coming.
