FAME IS A FOOD THAT DEAD MAN EATS |
Mohapatra Rajendra Prasad, a known face in the literary
circle in Orissa during the sixties, is no more with us to share the mundane
pleasures. Although a year has elapsed since he left us, still his ever-smiling
face is fresh in our minds. He has contributed a lot to Oriya Literature,
culture and society. During his stay in Calcutta he came in contact with many leading personalities of those times. He went on writing short stories, novels, dramas, songs and lyrics. He wrote as many as 15 novels and was shot into limelight in the then literary circles. He was a creative genius of no less standard. His novels and stories were mainly of immense social value. His style of writing was very simple and lucid. So was his art of presenting the themes in the novels. Roughly speaking, his novels brought his fame. He was actively associated with many literary and socio-cultural organisations in Calcutta and Cuttack. He acted in a role in Oriya film "Nari". He also wrote dialogues for the Oriya film "Bhakta Dhruva" and "Mahasindhutire". But as ill luck would have it, the latter could not see the day light. In course of time he left Calcutta and lived at Tirtol his native place. He had to struggle for existence wherever he stayed, either in Calcutta or Tirtol as he was not born with silver spoon within the teeth. He had to fight the fate all the way. This white-clad tall genius had no attraction for awards and laurels. He stood by himself. For this, perhaps he could not be commercially popular in his mission. He believed in what life had taught him. That is why he was beyond reach of the so-called intellectual society. He breathed his last on December 10,1994 leaving his colourful personality behind. He will long be remembered certainly by those who have read him on different occasions. But his literary ideals will be inspiring the younger and budding talents for all times to come. While going down the memory lane, I recall a legendary English poet who once said : "Fame is a food that dead man eats". Perhaps the soul, identified as Rajendra in his heavenly asylum, will be eating fame about which we are discussing now here on the earth on the occasion of his first death anniversary celebration by the Mohapatra Rajendra Prasad Smruti Sansad in Bhubaneswar. :-Biswanath Rout, The Eastern Times, 10-16 December,1995 |
